NALHN services the northern area of South Australia and therefore the NALHN Women and Children’s Division (WCD) is responsible for the health and wellbeing of a vast and growing population. Situated on Kaurna Land we acknowledge the Kaurna people as custodians of this land and honour the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women past and present who have birthed on this land for over 65,000 years.

The NALHN Maternity Unit is the second largest maternity service in SA, with more than 3,800 babies born each year. The WCD is a level 5 maternity service providing culturally appropriate care to families in the north. The staff are a welcoming and friendly team with collaboration occurring between allied health, medical and midwifery staff.

NALHN is the only hospital within South Australia and Australia to have the world-renowned postnatal Mother Carer Program. The Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH) also provides outstanding Home Visiting services, Perinatal Mental Health services, and a Continence Nursing Service for all women who access NALHN maternity services. LMH is accredited as Baby Friendly and has been since 2000. We are proud to be accredited as a Baby Friendly Facility, promoting, supporting, and protecting breastfeeding.

Program information

  • Two organisation orientation days at the beginning of the program
  • a total of nine supernumerary days across the four rotations, enabling a supported introduction to each unit
  • five professional development days that have been designed to align with the SA Health TPPP education framework.

Key benefits

The NALHN midwife TPPP offers the opportunity to work within a supportive environment, in a wide range of clinical areas, to assist with the consolidation of knowledge and the expansion of clinical skills to transition to the role of a practicing midwife by:

  • providing orientation at the organisation, division and unit level that assists with the transition into the professional midwifery role
  • providing quality support and learning opportunities, facilitating the building and development of clinical confidence
  • enabling the consolidation and development of clinical skills in the context of the professional midwifery role
  • extending understanding of professional responsibilities and boundaries.

The WCD is a dynamic place to work, and you will be a valued member of the midwifery team.

You will be part of a team recognising that everyone is an individual with unique needs but also valuable experiences to offer, from graduate midwife through to the most experienced senior midwife. We provide a supportive environment where staff members are treated with respect and honesty and are encouraged to strive for their individual goals both professionally and personally.

Site locations and specialty rotations

NALHN midwife TPPP placements are offered across all our clinical areas in the WCD.

As part of your program, you will have four placements across the below areas. Once offered a position, we will send out preference lists and ensure you have at least two areas of your choice at a minimum.

4 x 3 month rotations in the following areas:

  • Family Clinic LMH
  • Modbury Women and Paediatric Clinic
  • Women’s Health Ward (postnatal, antenatal and gynaecology)
  • Birthing and Assessment Unit
  • Birth Centre
  • Special Care Nursery
  • Women’s Assessment Unit.
