Key benefits

Midwifery transition support pathways at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital will facilitate a learning environment which empowers newly qualified Registered Midwives (RM) to transition to:

  • their professional role
  • the WCHN organisation
  • the workplace/unit.

During your TPPP you will be supported to:

  • understand and function confidently and competently within the role as a RM
  • develop and consolidate a wide range of clinical midwifery skills
  • work in partnership with women and their families to plan care, in conjunction with other health professionals
  • critically analyse and reflect on your developing practice
  • actively engage in continuing development opportunities
  • develop a network of collegial support.

To achieve this, WCH Transition Support Pathways utilise and recognise:

  • stages of transition/transition shock
  • learning activities which incorporate critical thinking, evidence based practice, reflection and simulation
  • individual learning styles and personality types, character strengths.

The WCHN Transition Support Program will provide:

  • comprehensive orientation and induction to the hospital
  • clinical ward support from dedicated educators
  • regular clinical feedback (each placement)
  • online and face to face transition to midwifery practice modules
  • weekly debriefs and transition support emails
  • simulated learning activities
  • 1:1 transition support coaching
  • self-care program
  • career pathway planning
  • workshops.

During your TPPP you will be supported by:

  • Transition Support Educators
  • Nurse Mangers and Nursing Unit Managers
  • Ward/Divisional Clinical Nurse Educators
  • Working With Wisdom Mentors
  • Preceptors/Peer Support Buddies
  • Ward colleagues.

Site locations and specialty rotations

TPPP placements are offered across all of our clinical areas in the Women’s and Babies' Division.

You will be asked to provide information about your previous placements and experience which will determine the areas in which you are allocated during your TPPP.

Women’s and Babies' Division

Four three-month rotations:

  • Women’s Outpatient Department
  • Women’s Assessment Service
  • Birth Suite
  • Antenatal Gynaecological Ward
  • Postnatal Ward

Information sessions

Applicants are encouraged to attend an information session to be held in June at the WCH.
