Patient Pathway Information

Starting from August 2024

NALHN Outpatients Department is focusing on sustainability by reducing the number of letters it sends out. We will be communicating with patients about their appointments and referrals via SMS to mobile phones.

What are the changes?

You will now receive a text message from SA Health with your appointment details and updates about your outpatient referral process.

You will be able to confirm or cancel your appointment via SMS. You will also be able to update your details and complete any required questionnaires before you arrive for your appointment.

What do I need to do?

Ensure your mobile phone details are up to date. If you do not have a mobile phone, you can nominate a carer or member of your family to accept the messages on your behalf.

When clicking on links from the patient pathway you will be asked to confirm your identity by entering your surname and date of birth as an extra security measure.

Be aware of scams

All SMS messages will come as a non-reply message from SA Health. You will never be asked to share financial information such as your credit card details or be asked to transfer money in any form when you receive these messages.

Information for General Practitioners

The following guidelines provide clear referral criteria to assist in supporting GPs in their decision making over whether to refer a patient to NALHN Specialist Outpatient services.

Including:

  • description of service
  • conditions seen and exclusions
  • referral criteria
  • consultants contact and referral information.

Ultimately the decision regarding whether an individual patient fulfils the criteria for the core activity will be made by a NALHN senior clinician with reference to guidelines developed within specialties.

We are in the process of transitioning all referral guidelines to the statewide Clinical Prioritisation Criteria (CPCs).
