The Women's and Children's Hospital provides state of the art health care for women and children in Adelaide and South Australia.

It is the state’s leading provider of specialist care for children with acute and chronic conditions and SA’s largest maternity and obstetric service. It also provides important community-based services.

Each year, more than 30,000 people are admitted and about 5000 babies are born at the hospital. In addition more than 250,000 people come to the hospital as outpatients.

The hospital has 295 beds. The hospital’s paediatric and adolescent wards cater for all paediatric specialties. Women’s wards provide antenatal, gynaecology, neonatal and postnatal care.

Emergency Department

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s Paediatric Emergency Department is open 24-hours, seven days a week and is located on the ground floor of the hospital.

The Paediatric Emergency Department is a level 1 major trauma centre for children in South Australia. Level 1 trauma centres provide a 24-hour full spectrum of care for the most critically injured patients.

The Child and Adolescent Virtual Urgent Care Service is a virtual assessment option, giving parents and carers access to timely medical care, potentially reducing the need to visit the Emergency Department.

The service is available 7 days a week from 1.00 pm to 8.30 pm. Access the service at www.wch.sa.gov.au/virtualurgentcare

The hospital’s Women's Assessment Service is also open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No appointment is necessary.

The Women's Assessment Service provides expert care for women in labour, those who are experiencing problems during pregnancy or up to six weeks after the birth of their baby and women experiencing reproductive and gynaecological problems.

Both the Paediatric Emergency Department and the Women’s Assessment Service can be accessed from the hospital entrance at Kermode Street or from the entrance on the corner of Brougham Place and Sir Edwin Smith Avenue.
