Shortage of non-ionic iodinated contrast agents

You may be aware of the current worldwide shortage of non-ionic iodinated contrast agents. The shortage is due to the lockdown of the main supplier’s production facility in Shanghai, China, imposed by local authorities in response to an outbreak of COVID-19.

SAMI is monitoring supply and demand and is actively seeking other sources of contrast.

For SAMI, this shortage impacts some of our CT and Angiography studies only.

MRI, Ultrasound, PET scans and all other imaging modalities are not affected.

What it means for you?

For referrers

Please continue to send through all requests for imaging as clinically required. Our radiologists will review all CT and Angiography requests and our team will liaise with you if a non-contrast or alternate study might be appropriate.

For patients

Please continue to book and attend your appointments as normal. Our team will, in collaboration with your doctor, ensure you have the most appropriate imaging. If you have any further questions, please discuss them with your doctor or contact the SAMI team where your appointment is booked.
