Cancer services in regional South Australia

Regional cancer services are an integral part of our statewide cancer services, providing access to treatment outside of metropolitan hospitals and helping many regional and remote patients get the cancer care they need, closer to their home.

About cancer services in regional South Australia

There are 15 chemotherapy units in hospitals across regional South Australia. Each unit has between one and six chemotherapy chairs, with 65 chairs in total. Our staff are trained and accredited to administer chemotherapy treatment and other supportive services for cancer patients, including chemotherapy education and central venous access device maintenance.

All chemotherapy units are equipped with Digital Telehealth Network facilities so that some medical appointments may be held with specialists based in Adelaide without needing to travel.

Chemotherapy units

Chemotherapy units in SA Health are classified as low, medium or high complexity based on the services available at that site. Regional South Australia has 6 medium complexity chemotherapy units located in Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Berri, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor. Medium complexity chemotherapy units provide medium and low complexity cancer treatments and supportive care for common cancers in stable patients.

There are 9 low complexity chemotherapy units, located in Ceduna, Clare, Gawler, Kangaroo Island, Mount Barker, Murray Bridge, Naracoorte, Port Augusta, and Wallaroo who are able to provide low complexity chemotherapy for common cancers in stable patients only.
