Rehabilitation services for older people

Rehabilitation care is highly effective and older adults do benefit from rehabilitation, especially older patients who are often assessed for rehabilitation needs after a major event such as a hip fracture and/or a stroke.

Patients may be admitted to a rehabilitation facility to maximise their recovery. Care is then delivered by a team of allied health professionals including nursing staff, a specialist rehab physician or geriatrician.

Rehabilitation and Geriatric Evaluation Management (GEM) services have been established to focus on the patient and achieve goals which aim towards maximum independence.

South Australia has some of the best rehabilitation services in Australia, and services are planned to increase at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Modbury Hospitals.
