Most people with COVID-19 will have mild symptoms and be able to safely manage their symptoms at home. It’s important to have a plan in case you or anyone in your household gets COVID-19.
There are a few steps you can take to keep both you and your household safe:
1. Get vaccinated
If you are vaccinated, you are less likely to go to hospital or get seriously ill from COVID-19.
2. Talk to a health care worker
Make an appointment to see your health worker, doctor or specialist if you have any health concerns or conditions. Discuss your eligibility for COVID-19 treatments.
Your pharmacist can help you (PDF 124KB) to plan to access your essential medicines and the most appropriate COVID-19 treatment for you.
3. Wear a mask
Carry a mask with you at all times, even if they aren’t mandatory. Use your mask when you can’t keep 1.5 metres away from others.

4. Prepare a COVID-Ready kit for your household
Stock up on some common household items to treat your COVID-19 symptoms, such as:
- a thermometer
- pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen)
- your regular medications (keep more than 2 weeks supply)
- oral rehydration solutions/powders/tablets
- sore throat lozenges
- a plan for who can look after your children, pets, or people in your care if you have to go to hospital
- masks, hand sanitiser and gloves
- a plan for how you’ll get food and essentials for two weeks (know how to order online or have a family member/friend who can drop off supplies).
5. Know what to do it you test positive to COVID-19
It’s normal to feel worried or scared if you test positive for COVID-19.
Familiarising yourself with the latest health advice and COVID-19 information will help you be prepared to carry out the required steps when you return a COVID-19 positive result.
Knowing what will happen next and who can provide support, can help ease any feelings of uncertainty or anxiety that you may feel if you test COVID-19 positive.
